Water Fittings Regulations

An overview of the legal framework for water fittings in the UK — and how it differs across the nations.

England & Wales

The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 apply in England and Wales. They set requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of water fittings to prevent waste, misuse, undue consumption and contamination of the water supply. They are enforced by water undertakers such as Thames Water, Severn Trent, Yorkshire Water and United Utilities.

Scotland

Scotland has its own framework under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws, administered by Scottish Water. While the principles are similar, the specific byelaws and notification requirements differ, so work in Scotland must follow the Scottish requirements.

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland has its own water fittings regulations administered by NI Water. Again, the principles align with the rest of the UK, but the detail differs.

Important: One set of regulations does not apply identically throughout the UK. We always confirm which framework applies to your premises before specifying works.
